BNI- Coimbatore and Sri Lanka virtual Business Conclave

The Sri Lanka Deputy High Commission in Chennai together with Business Network India, Coimbatore organized a virtual business conclave on 30th January 2021 with the aim of enhancing awareness of business opportunities available in Sri Lanka and India. Making the keynote speech at the meeting Mr. K. Kiritharan, Actg. Deputy High Commissioner highlighted the humongous trade and investment opportunities available in Sri Lanka and invited Indian entrepreneurs to explore the business opportunities available in Sri Lanka in heterogeneous sectors. Moreover, all the concerns raised by the participants were answered by Mr. Dilanga Hettiarachchi, Third Secretary (Commercial) of the Deputy High Commission.

More than 250 participants attended this virtual session.

Sri Lankan envoys to south India meet with industry professionals to seek business opportunities for bolstering the economy

Making a great initiative to start the New Year 2021, Sri Lanka Deputy High Commission in Chennai organized a business interaction session with industry professionals who have been operating in legal, film and investment sectors in south India. The objective of the session was to make the professionals aware of business and investment opportunities available in Sri Lanka and promote Sri Lanka as a destination for shooting South Indian films.

Welcoming the professionals, Actg. Deputy High Commissioner, Mr. K. Kiritharan stressed the importance of doing business with Sri Lanka and cost advantages can be gained due to the exclusive proximity of Sri Lanka to the southern part of India.

Followed by his opening remarks, Mr. Dilanga Hettiarachchi, Third Secretary, Commercial of the Deputy High Commission made a comprehensive presentation on trade, investment & tourism opportunities available in Sri Lanka and highlighted the concessions available under Indo- Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement (ISFTA).

During the discussion, the Mission official requested them to visit Sri Lanka to explore the possibilities and opportunities available for making films. Accepting the request, Mr.B.E.Vijith, an emerging player in the Tamil film industry, stressed his intention to visit Sri Lanka with the group of film professionals comprising directors, producers and celebrities upon the resumption of the airports for commercial flights. Further he urged his interest to meet with Sri Lanka`s leading TV Channels` professionals, film producers and directors.

Moreover, Mr. K.K. Sivasshanmugam, Senior Advocate, expressed his interest to provide their consultation generously whenever the Mission requires legal assistance.

The Actg. Deputy High Commissioner agreed to facilitate their visit and enticed the participants to invest in Sri Lanka.

73rd Independence Day of Sri Lanka

The Sri Lanka Deputy High Commission in Chennai celebrated the 73rd Anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka on 04th February 2021.

This year, the prevailing Covid-19 restrictions prevented the Mission from inviting fellow Sri Lankans as well as the well-wishers of the Mission residing in Chennai. The Acting Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka, Mr. K. Kiritharan, ceremonially hoisted the National Flag followed by singing of the National Anthem. The Mission staff and their families observed two minutes of silence honouring those who sacrificed their lives for the Motherland.

The proceedings began with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp after which pre-recorded multi-faith religious observances were screened. Blessings were imparted by Venerable Kalawane Mahanama Thero, Monk-in-Charge, Maha Bodhi Society, Chennai, Dr. T.S. Shanmugam Sivachariar Swamigal, Chief Priest & Administrator of Sri Kaligambal Kamateswarar Devasthanam, Rev. Fr. Dr. V. Ignatius SJ, Parish Priest, Fathima Church and Imam Dr. Salahuddin Mohammed Ayub, Chief Quazi, Royapettah Mosque.

Tri-lingual National Day Messages of the Honorable Prime Minister were read out by Mr. K. Kiritharan, Actg. Deputy High Commissioner, Ms. Thilina Jayawardena, Counsellor and Mr. Dilanga Hettiarachchi, Third Secretary (Commercial). The National Day message of the Hon. Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka was read by Ms. Neetha Chandrasena, Second Secretary.

Concluding the celebration, the promotional documentary jointly produced by the Foreign Ministry, President’s Media Division (PMD), Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation and Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau was screened.
