DEEPAVALI CELEBRATIONS - 2017

The Deepavali celebrations was organized by the Deputy High Commission of Sri Lanka in Chennai with the performance of a cultural troupe from the Anjana Rajapaksha Academy of Sri Lanka, a former student of Kalashetra Academy in Chennai on 20th October 2017. Venerable Kalavane Mahanama Thero, the Monk-In-Charge for the Maha Bodhi Society, Officials of the Bank of Ceylon and SriLankan Airlines in Chennai and all staff members of the Deputy High Commission with their family members participated at the event followed by “High Tea” Reception.

Addressing the gathering, Deputy High Commissioner Mr. V. Krishnamoorthy highlighted the importance of celebrating Deepavali stating that it is neither about religion nor ritual, rather it symbolises the victory over darkness with our collective effort by reeling the universal message of love, peace, happiness, harmony, light, togetherness, prosperity and health. Likewise, the SLDHC plays a role in serving to the interests of Indo-Sri Lanka relations, especially as part of its reconciliation process by shedding lights on the lives of children born to Sri Lankan refugee parents by regularizing the issuance of Birth Certificates and Citizenship. He also highlighted the 42nd Special Consular Programme that was conducted on the same day at the Mission wherein 66 Birth Certificates were issued and 66 Citizenship applications were processed, among other things.

The participants witnessed the colourful performance by the dancing troupe of Anjana Rajapaksha Academy.

Cultural performance by the staff of Bank of Ceylon and memorable songs in Sinhala and Tamil sung by the staff of the Deputy High Commission added glamour to the occasion.

Welcome remarks of the event was delivered by Mr. Wishwanath Aponsu, Minister and the vote of thanks by Mr. Yasantha De Silva, Counsellor of the Mission.

The event concluded with a dinner at the Official Residence highlighting the Sri Lankan hospitality.
